Founded in 1954, the School of Mathematical Sciences of Capital Normal University (hereinafter referred to as SMS) has made remarkable strides in teaching, research, talent cultivation, and social service over the past six decades. In September 2017, Capital Normal University and its mathematics discipline were included in China's "Double First-Class" Initiative, a national plan aimed at elevating a selected number of universities and disciplines to world-class status. In February 2022, both the university and its mathematics discipline were selected again in the second stage of the "Double World-Class" Initiative after passing expert reviews. These two milestones mark SMS's steady growth and high academic standing.

Over the past decades, SMS has been dedicated to maintaining the highest ethical standards in research and teaching, introducing and cultivating talents, and promoting interdisciplinary collaboration. The school now boasts a contingent of leading mathematicians with extensive research interests, profound knowledge, and well-knit scholarly work, including one member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and of the Third World Academy of Sciences (Fang Fuquan), 42 professors (of whom 8 are listed in major national talent programs), and 37 associate professors. Among its 92 faculty members, 87 obtained their doctoral degrees in leading Chinese and overseas universities and institutes and 42 are supervising doctoral students of their own. To boost these faculties' professional growth, SMS has provided them with guidance and support tailored to their specific needs at their respective career stages.

Over the years, SMS researchers have scored numerous academic achievements and garnered major awards and grants under the guidance of their academic leaders, thereby steadily enhancing the school's prestige at home and internationally. They have obtained original research results in the fields of geometry and topology, algebra and number theory, nonlinear analysis, differential equation, mathematical statistics, and mathematics and information security, publishing papers in leading journals in mathematics and statistics such as Invent. Math., Acta Math., Annal. Math., J. Am. Stat. Assoc., and Phys. Rev. Lett. Two faculty members were invited by the International Congress of Mathematicians to give 45-minute sectional lectures, a coveted honor extended only to the best mathematicians worldwide. In terms of awards and grants, the project "Geometric Topology of Differential Manifolds" that SMS researchers conducted won the second prize of 2014 State Natural Science Award; other awards that SMS faculties have garnered include the second prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award, the first and the second prizes in Natural Science of the Ministry of Education (MOE), the second prize of Scientific and Technological Progress Award (MOE), and the first prize of the Beijing Science and Technology Award. The SMS research team on geometric analysis is included in the program for innovative teams with rolling funding supported by the MOE. SMS mathematicians have conducted research supported by the National Natural Science Foundation (9 grants from the Key Programs, over 80 grants from the General Programs, and over 30 grants from the Young Scientists Fund Programs), the National Key Scientific Instrument and Equipment Development Project (2 grants), the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars (4 grants), and various other institutions (over 10 grants).

SMS has been strongly committed to the cultivation of the next generation of mathematicians. To accomplish this mission, it not only provides excellent undergraduate and graduate programs but also offers its students many opportunities for academic exchanges through its joint degree programs with international partners.

On the undergraduate level, the school has set up a model of quality undergraduate education that features a solid foundation in knowledge and skills, broad areas of inquiry, and sound research ethics. From the students' enrollment to their graduation, the school has tracked their growth closely and inculcated them with high ethical and professional standards. In 2021, SMS was listed by the MOE in the second batch of top-notch student training program 2.0 bases. In 2022, the SMS interdisciplinary team in mathematics and information science was listed among the 200 "Huang Danian" role-model teaching teams, named after the late renowned geophysicist in honor of his contribution to the country. The school offers three undergraduate majors, namely, pure and applied mathematics (including an optional math education program), informatics and computer science, and statistics, with the major of pure and applied mathematics and that of statistics listed by the MOE among the "10,000 national first-class undergraduate programs." The national award-winning undergraduate course cluster "Foundations of Mathematics" encompasses one national quality undergraduate course ("Advanced Algebra & Abstract Algebra") and two Beijing quality undergraduate courses ("Analytic Geometry" and "Geometry"), with its teaching team publishing numerous papers and textbooks that won Teaching Achievement Awards both at the national and municipal levels (first and second prizes).

On the graduate level, SMS offers two Master's programs (disciplinary education in mathematics and applied statistics), two first-level doctoral programs (mathematics and statistics), and mathematics postdoctoral research programs. The school also allows its students to pursue a dual doctoral degree at the University of Liverpool and/or a dual master's degree at the University of Bordeaux.

While maintaining its strength in fields where it is already competitive, SMS has also energetically promoted problem-oriented research through interdisciplinary collaborations. On the one hand, it has strived to push the frontiers of the discipline further, creating an international impact on basic mathematical research; on the other, it has streamlined its innovation system by focusing interdisciplinary research efforts on key challenges facing Beijing and China at large, delivering much-needed technologies and services and promoting their commercialization to produce actual social benefits. For example, in December 2020, it set up the National Center for Applied Mathematics in Beijing, the only one of its kind in the capital city. SMS has also set up the Beijing Imaging Detection Engineering Center, the Beijing Advanced Innovation Center for Imaging Technology, the Beijing Key Laboratory of Light Field and Digital Geometry, and the Key Laboratory of 3D Information Access and Application (MOE), which platforms keep making important breakthroughs in applying mathematics to imaging technology.

SMS has always set great store by international academic exchanges with leading universities in the world. Apart from the aforementioned dual doctoral and master's degree programs it offers by partnering with the University of Liverpool and the University of Bordeaux respectively, SMS also provides its undergraduates with multiple dual bachelor's degree programs. Depending on the agreements between SMS and its partners, students can earn two bachelor's degrees by spending the first two or three years at SMS and the following two years at a partner university (two plus two years for Rutgers University and the University of Cincinnati; three plus two years for the University at Buffalo, SUNY).

The school has also actively promoted the collaboration and exchanges between its faculties and leading researchers in the world. In recent years, SMS has invited over ten world-renowned mathematicians as guest professors for collaborative research and talent cultivation. To encourage its faculties to engage in academic collaborations with international colleagues, the school has in place a variety of policies such as sabbatical assignments, travel grants for short-term funded visits, and seminars of innovation and research.

Last but not least, SMS has consistently demonstrated its commitment to supporting the development of Beijing with scientific and technological innovation. Leveraging the school's strength in basic research, its multiple major scientific and technological platforms have made important breakthroughs, delivering much-needed applications and services such as intelligent traffic control and precision medicine. For instance, by tackling key mathematical problems in detection imaging, SMS researchers have greatly boosted the development of the medical industry and Computed Tomography machine manufacturing. The digital geometry processing technologies that SMS faculties developed are now playing a vital role in the AI-based diagnostic medical imaging industry in Beijing. After the outbreak of COVID-19, the accurate prediction models produced by SMS researchers have made the government's responses to the epidemic more scientific and targeted, thereby ensuring social stability and economic development.

While cultivating top-notch mathematical talents, SMS has also contributed significantly to the basic education in Beijing and China at large. In addition to training large numbers of math teachers, the school has actively engaged in various outreach initiatives. For example, it has participated in the national poverty eradication initiative by helping poverty-stricken people to acquire knowledge and skills. It has also been popularizing mathematical knowledge by sponsoring magazines (e.g., K-12 Mathematics and Middle School Mathematics) and publishing numerous popular books on mathematics.
