We investigate the fast relaxation of internal energy in nonequilibrium gas models. The model is first derived from the kinetic theory of gases. The resulting system is then recast in a convenient hyperbolic-parabolic symmetric form with stiff sources and small diffusion terms. A priori estimates and existence of local solutions are established for well prepared data. Second order estimates between the slow component of the solution and the one temperature equilibrium solution are then obtained justifying the apparition of the volume viscosity coefficient. The situation of ill prepared data with initial layers is also investigated. The impact of the volume viscosity coefficient in fluid mechanics is finally addressed.


Vincent Giovangigli studied at Ecole Normale Superieure de la rue d'Ulm from 1978 to 1982. He obtained a PhD in Applied Mathematics in 1982 at University Paris-6 and Habilitation Thesis in 1988 at University Paris-6.

He is currently CNRS Research Director (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique) at Centre de Mathématiques Appliquées of Ecole Polytechnique. Vincent Giovangigli has been the head of Center of Applied Mathematics at Ecole Polytechnique from 1998 to 2006.

His research activities concern the kinetic theory of reacting and nonequilibrium gases, the mathematical analysis of systems of partial differential equations governing complex fluids and the simulation of flows with detailed chemistry and detailed transport.

Honors: Jacque-Louis Lions Prize from the French Academy of Sciences 2011.
